نُورٌa light تَولَّدَwas born مِنْfrom شَمْسٍa sun وَمِنand from قَمرِa moon
فيin طَرْفِهِhis gaze قَدَرٌa fate أَمْضَىmore piercing مِنَthan القَدَرِfate
A light born of a sun and a moon;
A light born of sun and moon
In his gaze lies a fate more piercing than fate.
In his gaze, a destiny more lasting than fate
أَصلىscorched فُؤادِيmy heart بِلاwithout ذنبٍfault جَوَىanguish حُرَقٍburning pangs
لمdid not يُبْقِleave مِنْof مُهْجَتيmy lifeblood شَيْئاًanything ولمand did not يذَرِspare
Burning anguish scorched my guiltless heart;
My heart prayed, though innocent, and was seared
It left nothing of my lifeblood and spared nothing.
Nothing of my passion remained, nothing spared
لاno وَالرَّحِيقِby the wine المُصَفَّىpurified مِنْfrom مَراشِفِهِhis lips
وماand what بِخَدَّيْهِon his two cheeks مِنْof خالٍa beauty mark وَمِنْand of طُرَرِlocks of hair
No—by the pure wine from his lips,
By the pure nectar of his lips
And by the beauty mark and locks upon his cheeks,
Or the moles and beauty marks on his cheeks
ماnot أَنْصَفَtreated fairly الحُبُّlove قَلْبيmy heart فيin حُكومَتِهِits judgment
ولاnor عَفاpardoned الشَّوقُlonging عَنِّيfrom me عَفْوَthe pardon of مُقْتَدِرِone with power
Love has not treated my heart fairly in its judgment,
Love did not judge my heart fairly in its realm
Nor has longing pardoned me as one with power might.
Nor did yearning pardon me with the pardon of the Almighty
