قَلْبٌa heart بِلَوْعاتِby the burning pangs of الهوَىlove مَعْمُودُstricken
حَيٌّalive كَمَيْتٍlike one dead حاضِرٌpresent مَفْقُودٌlost
A heart stricken by love's burning pangs,
A heart laden with the pangs of passion
Alive like one dead, present yet lost.
Alive like a dead man, present yet lost
مَاnot ذُقْتُI tasted طَعْمَthe flavor of المَوْتِdeath فيin كَأسِthe cup of الأسَىsorrow
حَتَّىuntil سَقَتنِيْهِgave it to me to drink الظِّباءُthe gazelles الغِيدُthe graceful ones
I never tasted the flavor of death in sorrow's cup
I tasted not the flavor of death in the cup of sorrow
Until the graceful gazelles gave it to me to drink.
Until she made me drink it, that graceful gazelle
مَنْwho ذَاthat one يُداويheals القلْبَthe heart مِنْof داءِthe sickness of الهوىlove
إِذْsince لاno دَواءٌremedy لِلهَوىfor love مَوْجُودُexists
Who is there to heal the heart of love's sickness,
Who can cure the heart of the disease of love
Since no remedy for love exists?
When no cure for passion exists
أمْor كَيفَhow أَسْلوI forget غَادَةًa graceful maiden ماnot حُبُّهاlove for her
إِلّاexcept قَضاءٌa decree ماnot لَهُfor it مَرْدودُreversal
Or how can I forget a graceful maiden, when love for her is nothing
Or how can I ask for peace from one whose love
But a decree that cannot be averted?
Is but a decree that brooks no repeal
القَلْبُthe heart مِنْهاof hers مُسْتَريْحٌat ease سَالِمٌunharmed
وَالقَلْبُand the heart مِنِّيof mine جاهِدٌstruggling مَجْهُودُexhausted
Her heart is at ease, unharmed,
While her heart finds peace and safety
And my heart is struggling, exhausted.
Mine remains struggling and distressed
