ونائحٍ في غُصونِ الأَيكِ أرَّقني
وماand not عُنيتُI was concerned بشيءٍwith anything ظَلَّcontinued to يَعْنيهِconcern him
وما عُنيتُ بشيءٍ ظَلَّ يَعْنيهِ
And a mourner in the grove’s branches kept me awake,
A mourner in the branches of a Tamarisk tree kept me awake
Yet none of what kept troubling him concerned me.
And I paid no attention to anything that continued to grieve him

Collared with necklaces that never leave him,
Enchained with necklaces that will not leave him
Until one of his collarbones parts from him.
Until one of his collarbones leaves him

He spent the night weeping for a sorrow I knew nothing of,
He spent the night weeping for a grief I did not know of
And I spent the night weeping with a sorrow he did not know.
And I spent the night weeping for a grief he does not know of
