رَفعتُهُI lifted it فماbut not ارتَفَعْit rose
The whiteness of gray hair now shines bright.
The whiteness of hoary age has appeared
I lifted it, but it did not rise.
I have raised it, but it did not rise
إِذاwhen رَأىit saw البِيضَthe fair-skinned women انْقَمَعْit shrank away
مِنْfrom بَينِbetween يَأسٍdespair وطَمَعْand hope
When it sees fair-skinned women, it shrinks away,
When it saw the white hair, it recoiled
Amid despair and hope.
Between despair and hope
للَّهِto God أَيَّامُdays النَّخَعْal-Nakhaʿ
يَاoh ليتَنيwould that I were فِيهاin them جَذعْa young colt
God bless the days of al-Nakhaʿ!
By Allah, the days of youth
Oh, would that I were a young colt in those days,
Oh, would that I were in them a log
أَخُبُّI trot فيهاin them وأَضَعْand I gallop
Trotting and galloping through them.
I would hide in them and settle down
