ياO مَنyou who عليهِupon him رداءُcloak البأسِvalor والجودِand generosity
يا مَن عليهِ رداءُ البأسِ والجودِ
منfrom جودِthe generosity of كفكَyour palm يجريflows الماءُwater فيin العودِthe wood
من جودِ كفكَ يجري الماءُ في العودِ
O you who wear the cloak of valor and generosity,
O you who wear the cloak of affliction and generosity
From your hand’s bounty, water flows within the wood.
From your generous palm flows water into wood
لمَّاwhen تطلعتَyou appeared فيon يومِthe day of الخميسِThursday لناto us
لمَّا تطلعتَ في يومِ الخميسِ لنا
والناسُand the people حولكaround you فيin عيدٍa festival بلاwithout عيدِa festival
والناسُ حولك في عيدٍ بلا عيدِ
When you appeared to us on Thursday,
When on Thursday you appeared to us
While the people around you celebrated, though it was no feast day,
And people around you on a feast without feast
وبادرتْand hastened نحوكَtoward you الأبصارُthe eyes واكتحلتْand applied kohl
وبادرتْ نحوكَ الأبصارُ واكتحلتْ
بحسنِwith the beauty of يوسُفَJoseph فيin محرابِthe prayer niche of داودِDavid
بحسنِ يوسُفَ في محرابِ داودِ
And eyes hastened toward you, taking as their kohl
Eyes hastened towards you and were lined
Joseph’s beauty in David’s prayer niche.
