قَلبيmy heart رَهينٌheld captive بينَbetween أَضلاعيmy ribs
مِنfrom بينِbetween إيناسٍreassurance وإِطْماعِand the stirring of hope
My heart is held captive between my ribs,
My heart is captive within my ribs
Between reassurance and the stirring of hope.
Among hopes and desires
مِنfrom حَيْثُwhere ماever يَدعوهُcalls it داعيthe caller of الهوىlove
أجابَهُit answered him لَبَّيْكَat your service مِنas داعِa caller
Wherever love’s caller calls it,
It answered the caller of passion “Here I am”
It answers him: “At your service, O caller!”
From wherever it calls
مَنwho لسَقيمٍfor a sick man ماnot لهُfor him عائدٌa visitor to the sick
وميِّتٍand a dead man ليسthere is not لهfor him ناعيone who announces a death
Who will care for a sick man with no visitor,
Who can help a hopeless sick man
And a dead man with no one to announce his death?
Or a dead man with no mourner

When my reprover saw what she saw,
When my critic saw what she saw
And her hearing was attentive to me,
And my hearing took it all in

مَهْلاًeasy now لقدindeed أَبلغْتَyou have conveyed to أَسْماعيmy ears
She said, without intending lewd speech:
She said, without intending insult
“Easy now—your words have indeed reached my ears.”
“Enough! You have overdone it, my hearing can take no more."
