Ah, alas for my soul, and woe to its mother,

For what it has suffered from the burning anguish of its sorrow.

May I be a ransom for her who slew my soul,

And did not fear God in her reproach.

I lower my eyelids whenever she appears,

And use a byname when I am told, 'Name her.'

I deal cautiously with watching eyes and fear the watcher,

And watch for a lapse in her guardian's vigilance.

She took me captive with her neck, cheek, and bosom,

On the morning she shot me with her arrows.
