ذاتُa woman endowed with دلٍّcoquettish charm وِشاحُهاher sash قلقُrestless and loose
مِنfrom ضُمورٍslenderness وحِجْلُهاand her anklet شَرِقُchoked tight
A woman of coy charm, her sash shifts restlessly,
A heart of anxiety, its cheerfulness disturbed
from slenderness, while her anklet is choked tight.
By withering, while its vigor has risen
بَزَّتِstole الشَّمسُthe sun نورَهاher radiance وحَباهاand bestowed upon her
لحظَthe glance of عينيهِhis two eyes شادِنٌa young gazelle خَرِقُtimid
The sun stole her radiance; she was granted
The sun adorned it with light and granted it
the glance of his eyes by a timid young gazelle.
A moment for eyes of a lover bursting
ذَهبٌgold خَدُّهاher cheek يذوبُmelts حَياءًfrom shyness
وسِوىand apart from ذاكَthat كلُّهall of it ورِقُsilver
Her cheek is gold, melting from shyness,
Her cheek is gold melting in shyness
and all the rest of her is silver.
And besides that, all is but paper
إنif أَمُتْI die مِيتةَthe death of المُحبِّينَthe lovers وجْداًfrom ardent longing
وفؤاديand my heart منَfrom الهوىpassionate love حَرِقُablaze
If I die the death of lovers from longing,
If the passionate's beloved dies of love
while my heart is ablaze with love,
My heart is burnt by passion
فالمناياthen death منfrom بينَamong غادٍone traveling at dawn وسارٍand one traveling by night
كُلُّevery حيٍّliving being برهْنِهاas its pledge غَلِقُforfeited
then, among dawn travelers and night travelers, death
So death comes amidst one leaving and travelling
holds every living being as its forfeited pledge.
Every living, by its pledge, is fettered
