O calamities of time, come round, come round.

And be brief, if you wish, or linger long.

You have struck me a blow that leaves no respite,

    With every crushing, grievous calamity,

    And every mighty, heavy burden.

First, I was bereaved of the Messenger,

And afterward, of the pure, chaste one,

And of my father, kind to us and devoted to family ties,

And of my full brother, the noble Hasan,

And of the House endowed with interpretation and revelation,

    فَما لَهُ في الرزءِ مِن عَديلِ

    And of Gabriel's familiar visits to us;

For it has no equal among bereavements.

Today you will not turn aside from me,

And the All-Merciful suffices me as a giver.
