يُبَدِّرُhe squanders ماwhat أَصابَhe acquired وَلاand does not يُباليcare
أَسُحتاًwhether ill-gotten كانَwas ذَلِكَthat أَمor حَلالاlawful
He squanders what he acquires and does not care
whether it was ill-gotten or lawful.
فَلاso do not تَغتَرَّbe deceived بِالدُنياby this world وَذَرهاand leave it
فَماfor not تسوىis worth لَكَto you الدُنياthis world خِلالاa toothpick
So do not be deceived by this world, and leave it behind;
for this world is not worth a toothpick to you.
أَتَبخَلُare you miserly تائِهاًarrogant شَرِهاًgreedy بِمالٍwith wealth
يَكونُwill become عَلَيكَupon you بَعدَafter غَدٍtomorrow وَبالاa bane
Are you, arrogant and greedy, miserly with wealth
that will become a bane to you the day after tomorrow?
فَماfor not كانَwas الَّذيthat which عُقباهُits outcome شَرٌّevil
وَماand not كانَwas الخَسيسُwhat is base لَدَيكَin your eyes مالاwealth
For that whose outcome is evil is not wealth,
nor is what is base wealth in your eyes.
فَبِتُّso I spent the night مِنَamong الأُمورِaffairs بِكُلِّwith every خَيرٍgood thing
وَأَشرَفِهاand the noblest of them وَأَكمَلِهاand the most perfect of them خِصالاin qualities
So I spent the night with all that is good among affairs,
and the noblest of them, and the most perfect in qualities.
