عَظيمٌ هَولُهُ وَالناسُ فيهِ

عَظيمٌ هَولُهُ وَالناسُ فيهِ

حَيارى مِثلَ مَبثوثِ الفَراشِ

حَيارى مِثلَ مَبثوثِ الفَراشِ

Great is its terror, and the people in it

Its terror is great, and people in it

Are bewildered, like scattered moths.

Are confused like scattered butterflies

بِهِ تَتَغَيَّرُ الأَلوانُ خَوفاً

بِهِ تَتَغَيَّرُ الأَلوانُ خَوفاً

وَتَصطَكُّ الفَرائِصُ بِاِرتِعاشِ

وَتَصطَكُّ الفَرائِصُ بِاِرتِعاشِ

Because of it, complexions change from fear,

In it, faces change color in fear

And the flank muscles quake with trembling.

And robes flutter in trembling

هُنالِكَ كُلُّ ما قَدَّمتَ يَبدو

هُنالِكَ كُلُّ ما قَدَّمتَ يَبدو

فَعَيبُكَ ظاهِرٌ وَالسِرُّ فاشِ

فَعَيبُكَ ظاهِرٌ وَالسِرُّ فاشِ

There, all that you have sent ahead appears;

There, all you have done becomes clear

So your fault is plain, and the secret exposed.

Your fault exposed and secret scattered

تَفَقَّد نَقصَ نَفسِكَ كُلَّ يَومٍ

تَفَقَّد نَقصَ نَفسِكَ كُلَّ يَومٍ

فَقَد أَودى بِها طَلَبُ المَعاشِ

فَقَد أَودى بِها طَلَبُ المَعاشِ

Examine your soul's shortcomings every day,

Examine the faults of your soul every day

For the pursuit of livelihood has brought it to ruin.

For seeking livelihood has destroyed it

أَلا لِم تَبتَغي الشَهَواتِ طَوراً

أَلا لِم تَبتَغي الشَهَواتِ طَوراً

وَطَوراً تَكتَسي لينَ الرِياشِ

وَطَوراً تَكتَسي لينَ الرِياشِ

Ah, why do you seek sensual pleasures at one time,

Why do you not seek desires for a while

And at another clothe yourself in soft finery?

And for a while acquire fine garments
