أَأَقصُدُShall I aim بِالمَلامَةِwith reproach قَصدَtoward غَيريsomeone other than me
وَأَمريwhile my conduct كُلُّهُall of it باديopenly displaying الخِلافِdefiance
Shall I aim my reproach at someone else,
while all my conduct shows open defiance?
إِذاif عاشَhas lived اِمرُؤٌa man خَمسينَfifty عاماًyears
وَلَمand not يُرَis seen فيهِin him آثارُsigns العَفافِof chastity
If a man has lived for fifty years,
and no signs of chastity are seen in him,
فَلاthen no يُرجىis hoped لَهُfor him أَبَداًever رَشادٌright guidance
فَقَدfor indeed أَردىhas brought ruin بِنِيَّتِهِupon his intention التَجافيturning away
then right guidance can never be hoped for him,
for turning away has indeed brought his intent to ruin.
وَلِمand why لاnot أَبذُلُdo I offer الإِنصافَfairness مِنّيfrom myself
وَأَبلُغُand I reach طاقَتيmy utmost capacity فيin الإِنتِصافِseeking justice
And why should I not, for my part, deal fairly,
and do my utmost in seeking justice?
لِيَto me الوَيلاتُwoes إِنif نَفَعَتbenefit عِظاتيmy admonitions
سِوايَsomeone other than me وَلَيسَand there is not ليfor me إِلّاexcept القَوافيrhymes
Woe to me if my admonitions benefit
others, while I have nothing but rhymes.
