I am al-Husayn, son of Ali, son of Abu
Talib, the full moon in the land of the Arabs.
أَلَمhave … not? تَرَواyou (plural) seen وَتَعلَمواand you (plural) known أَنَّthat أَبيmy father

قاتِلُslayer of عَمرٍوAmr وَمُبيرand destroyer of مرحَبِMarhab
Have you not seen and known that my father
Is the slayer of Amr and the destroyer of Marhab?
وَلَمand did not يَزَلcease قَبلَbefore كُشوفِthe dispelling of الكَربِdistress
مُجَلِّياًclearing away ذَلِكَthat عَنfrom وَجهِthe face of النَبِيthe Prophet
And he never ceased, before distress was dispelled,
Clearing it from the Prophet’s face.
أَلَيسَis it not? مِنamong أَعجَبِthe strangest عَجَبِwonders of العَجَبِwonders
أَنthat يَطلُبَshould seek الأَبعَدُthe more distant one ميراثَthe inheritance of النَبِيthe Prophet
Is it not among the strangest wonders of wonders
That the more distant one should seek the Prophet’s inheritance,
وَاللَهُand God قَدindeed أَوصىenjoined بِحِفظِto safeguard الأَقرَبِthe nearer one
Though God has indeed enjoined safeguarding the nearer one?
