وَأَصلُand the foundation of الحَزمِprudence أَنthat تُضحيyou greet the morning
وَرَبُّكَand your Lord عَنكَwith you فيin الحالاتِthe circumstances راضِpleased
And the foundation of prudence is to greet the morning
To be resolute is to make sacrifice
With your Lord pleased with you in every circumstance,
And your Lord is pleased with you in hard times
وَأَنand that تَعتاضَyou take in exchange بِالتَخليطِin place of confusion رُشداًright guidance
فَإِنَّfor indeed الرُشدَright guidance مِنamong خَيرِthe best اِعتِياضِexchanges
And to exchange confusion for right guidance,
Wisdom lies in mixing with the righteous
For right guidance is among the best exchanges.
For virtue comes from good company
وَدَعand leave عَنكَaway from you الَّذيthat which يُغويleads astray وَيُرديand brings ruin
وَيورثُand gives rise to طولَprolonged duration of حُزنٍsorrow وَاِرتِماضِand anguish
And leave aside what leads astray and brings ruin,
Leave what misleads and ruins
And brings prolonged sorrow and anguish.
And brings prolonged sorrow and distress
وَخُذand take بِاللَيلِat night حَظَّthe share of النَفسِthe soul وَاِطرُدand banish
عَنِfrom العَينَينِthe two eyes مَحبوبَbeloved الغِماضِslumber
And take the soul's share at night, and banish
Take comfort for your soul at night and banish
From both eyes their beloved slumber.
From your eyes the alluring slumber
فَإِنَّfor indeed الغافِلينَthe heedless ذَويthose given to التَوانيindolence
نَظائِرُcounterparts لِلبَهائِمِto the beasts فيin الغِياضِthe thickets
For the heedless, given to indolence,
The heedless and procrastinating
Are like the beasts in the thickets.
Are like beasts grazing in the meadows
