رَؤوفٌcompassionate بِالبَرِيَّةِtoward creation ذوpossessor of اِمتِنانِbounty
A God—there is no god for us but Him—
He is the One God, there is no god but He
Compassionate toward creation, full of bounty.
Merciful to all creation, full of bounty
أُوَحِّدُهُI affirm His oneness بِإِخلاصٍwith sincerity وَحَمدٍand praise
وَشُكرٍand gratitude بِالضَميرِinwardly وَبِاللِسانِand with the tongue
I affirm His oneness with sincerity and praise,
I profess His oneness with devotion and praise
And gratitude, inwardly and with my tongue.
With my conscience and tongue I give thanks
وَأَفنَيتُand I used up الحَياةَlife وَلَمand did not أَصُنهاsafeguard it
وَزُغتُand I strayed إِلىtoward البَطالَةِidleness وَالتَوانيand indolence
And I have spent my life without safeguarding it,
I wasted my life, did not safeguard it
And I have strayed into idleness and indolence.
Inclined towards idleness and procrastination
وَأَسأَلُهُand I ask Him الرِضاapproval عَنّيof me فَإِنّيfor indeed I
ظَلَمتُI wronged النَفسَmyself فيin طَلَبِpursuit of الأَمانيdesires
And I ask Him to be pleased with me, for I
I ask for His pleasure, though I have wronged myself
Have wronged myself in pursuit of desires.
Seeking vain desires that offer no safety
إِلَيهِto Him أَتوبُI repent مِنof ذَنبيmy sin وَجَهليand my ignorance
وَإِسرافيand my excesses وَخَلعيand my casting off لِلعنانِof the reins
To Him I repent of my sin and my ignorance,
To Him I repent of my sins, ignorance
And my excesses and my casting off the reins.
Excess, rebellion, throwing off the reins
