أَخيmy brother قَدindeed طالَhas grown long لُبثُكَyour stay فيin الفَسادِcorruption
أَخي قَد طالَ لُبثُكَ في الفَسادِ
وَبِئسَand wretched is الزادُthe provision زادُكَyour provision لِلمَعادِfor the Hereafter
وَبِئسَ الزادُ زادُكَ لِلمَعادِ
My brother, your stay in corruption has grown long.
My brother, long has been your lingering in corruption,
And wretched is your provision for the Hereafter.
Evil is your provision for the return.
صَباinclined to passion فيكَwithin you الفُؤادُthe heart فَلَمyet did not تَرعهُyou deter it
صَبا فيكَ الفُؤادُ فَلَم تَرعهُ
وَحِدتَand you veered إِلىtoward مُتابَعَةِfollowing الفُؤادِthe heart
وَحِدتَ إِلى مُتابَعَةِ الفُؤادِ
Your heart inclined to passion within you, yet you did not deter it.
Youth poured into you, but you did not water it,
And you veered toward following your heart.
You followed the leading of passion.
وَقادَتكَand led you المَعاصيsins حَيثُwherever شاءَتthey wished
وَقادَتكَ المَعاصي حَيثُ شاءَت
وَأَلفَتكَand found you اِمرَءاًa man سَلِسَpliant القِيادِthe reins
وَأَلفَتكَ اِمرَءاً سَلِسَ القِيادِ
And sins led you wherever they wished.
Sins have led you wherever they wished,
And found you a man pliant to the reins.
Making you accustomed, smooth to be led.
لَقَدindeed نوديتَyou have been called لِلترحالِto depart فَاِسمَعso listen
لَقَد نوديتَ لِلترحالِ فَاِسمَع
وَلاand do not تَتَصامَمَنَّever feign deafness عَنِto المُناديthe caller
وَلا تَتَصامَمَنَّ عَنِ المُنادي
You have indeed been called to depart, so listen.
You were called to set forth, so listen!
And never feign deafness to the caller.
Be not stubborn against the caller.
كَفاكَsuffices for you مَشيبُthe graying of رَأسِكَyour head مِنas نَذيرٍa warning
كَفاكَ مَشيبُ رَأسِكَ مِن نَذيرٍ
وَغالَبَand has vied with لَونُهُits hue لَونَthe hue of السَوادِblackness
وَغالَبَ لَونُهُ لَونَ السَوادِ
The graying of your head is warning enough for you.
Enough is the grayness of your hair as a warner,
And its hue has vied with the hue of blackness.
Its color has overcome the blackness.
