Time troubles us and brings us grief,

and refuses to yield; we bring nothing that can overcome it.

After a man of Lu’ayy ibn Ghalib has been slain,

is a man to be alarmed if he dies or his companion dies?

Ah, many a day I have lost a generous man,

whose gifts went forth evening and morning in abundance.

So convey a message from me to Abu Sufyan,

for if I meet him one day, I shall reproach him.

For Harb used to kindle war; indeed,

every man among the people has a kinsman who makes demands of him.
