They came one after another to Death’s pool rather than let
And they came in succession to death's pool rather than
their protected woman and their sister be carried captive; together they rallied.
let their sister's ward be taken captive; and they rallied.

Khosrow pressed relentlessly against them with his troops,
And Kisra pressed them hard with troops,
and, overweening, followed up with swords and drove the assault on.
And Tamih followed up with swords and drove forward.

How many a close-massed raid he heaped upon them,
How many a keenly felt raid he added to their lot,
at whose heart you perish while the spearheads flash!
With lean steeds perishing and spearheads gleaming.

They stood bewildered; then Ṣafiyya brought healing—a deed of pride—
And they were bewildered; then Safiyya excelled in glory,
and summoned tribes whose fury never abates:
And she summoned tribes whose fierceness never abates.

And Jadaba, wrapping himself in its heat.
