Among all the tribes, no hope remains

of protection for me; killing myself would be better.

I had not thought, though calamities are many,

that I would die without visitors calling at my sickbed,

until I saw, as my life ran its course,

a kingdom vanish and its unity fall apart.

So al-Nu'man's loss struck me with the greatest calamity,

and after the noble lord, I returned only to be driven away.

O my soul, die of grief, and know for certain:

the grave will embrace your body after that.

Hope has failed, solace is gone, loyalty has dwindled.

The plain is no easy ground; the highlands are no heights.

People's eyes have frozen, their tears withheld,

and their hearts are deaf, hard, solid rock.

They show no mercy to a grief-stricken orphan girl,

her fathers slain, herself emaciated and driven away.

She seeks protection, but none is granted; and before this,

the caller for protection used to be honored as a lord.
