Umm Sa'd has indeed forsaken me, yet my love for her

Creeps through my limbs as her blood creeps.

She has burdened me with love, a burden of strain,

And added the burden of her coldness to love's heavy weight.

O you who reproach me for love, taste a draught of it,

And rebuke me for loving her and her ways.

You offer me counsel, yet your counsel is killing me,

And the shunning of those who depart early has grieved my soul.

Nor do I hope for consolation, for I am a lover

With true love—if only I could sip her dusky lips.

So, from great longing, I have a still greater groan,

And I have a plaintive cry at her distance and separation.

I have stood apart from mankind in this world through my love,

And have not awakened on its earth or beneath its sky.

The people of the earth learned weeping from my eye,

Even though it is constrained by its blindness.

Burning has straightened the curves of my ribs,

And remembrance has increased my spirit's suffering.

And parting has left my soul slain

For Umm Sa'd, when the time came for her departure.

A fleet she-camel carries her across every wilderness,

With the swing of its right foreleg and the wearing away of its nose-rings.

My bough has withered since they departed with the tribe,

And a dwelling turns cheap soon after being dear.

So my breast did not press hers the day she left in the afternoon,

Nor had her two lips kissed mine.
