The birds of high distinction hover in the sky,

and their snares are brown lances and firm resolves.

And whoever seeks to win honor does not enfold his heart

in fear while armored warriors clash.

And in that clash the horses keep swimming in blood,

like ships overtopped by seas crashing together.

His reach stretches far, as Ibn Sultan's has stretched,

and whoever advances to war falls short of him.

Sa'id—justice is spread throughout his domains,

while wrongs lie over his enemies' domains.

You see the horses and lions beneath his banner,

bearing the marks of manifest victory.

Beneath reins and spears, contending with them are

full-grown mares and keen steel swords.

Were even part of his vast host to reach the torrent,

it would not remain upon the face of the earth.

Within it are illustrious men, as though they were

full moons, fierce lions in combat.

Their faces mirror the gleam of their swords,

and at bloodshed's edges they are mighty lions.

He leads them like a sea when it foams,

and his two hands are clouds raining gold.

His right hand grips spears and reins,

and noble generosity opens it wide when he gives.

Had he come in the ancient days,

Ma'n and Hatim would not have been remembered for generosity.

His fingertips on the day of combat are death,

and, when looked to on the day of generosity, they are clouds.

    إذا رامَ أمراً أمرُهُ فَهْوَ قَائِمُ

    The decree of destiny and fate supports him;

whenever he desires a thing, his command is carried out.

When he couches the long brown spears for a raid,

the enemies are turned by them into mere beasts.

A youth—from his sword's edge across the lands there flowed

blood, and their Arabs and non-Arabs were humbled.

Wolves accompany him whenever he intends a raid,

to feast on flesh, as do the aged vultures.

His sword is entrusted with judgment on the day of battle's crush,

decreeing the foe's destruction, for it is judge.

It shears through the foe's armor, sword, and spears,

and no nick mars it when it strikes.

Had his enemies known the humiliation he would bring,

they would never have shown hostility.

If he intends to fight his enemies, they come to him,

to make peace with him in his home and be reconciled.

If they oppose him, he charges in, clashing with them,

and returns from them exultant and smiling.

So they will not seek combat, lest he come upon them

like a star plunging down to pelt the devils.

When he sits unarmored upon his noble steed's back,

the world quakes, and then the regions.

Tawny dust-clouds and the spears armor him,

when throats perish on the day of blows.

From beneath the dust his sword exchanges smiles

with glory's mouths, while heads hover on the horizon.

When he brandishes it on the day of combat, they close tight—

the enemies' breasts and skulls, in fear.

Your spearhead gleams like lightning in battle,

above dust on the horizon, though the horizon is dark.

A youth who spent his riches in pursuit of glory,

cheerfully—even had the stars been dirhams.

He enriched mankind, whoever lived upon the earth,

and in his world no one among the people remained destitute.

    وهل كَتَمَتْ نَشْرَ الربيع الكَمائِمُ

    He conceals his gifts, but praise reveals them;

have the bud-sheaths ever concealed spring's fragrance?

Every youth who comes purposefully to his assembly

finds himself swimming in the sea's depths.

My tongue outstrips my arm's reach in praising you,

for you, my lord, are merciful to creation.

When I fashion verse about you, I imagine myself

atop the Pleiades, a boon companion to the full moons.

    وهل من بَنِيْ دُنياي بالنَّظْمِ عالمُ

    I have praised you, leaving my bow no further room to draw;

is any son of my world skilled in verse?

No one among mankind has ever won glory like you,

nor has any poet ever uttered verse as I have.

So your garden is bedewed, and your command prevails,

and your justice is spread wide, and your glory endures.
