ويذكرand he recalls زلاتيmy lapses وفيand in الوصلِintimacy يرمزُhe signals
Indeed, the softly nasal-voiced gazelle's reproach delighted me.
The graceful gazelle's reproach delighted me,
And he recalls my lapses and makes signs in intimacy.
Though he chides my faults, and hints while we're together.
أحاولI seek منهfrom him رشفةًa sip منof رُضابهhis saliva
ويكسرand he lowers جَفْنيهhis two eyelids المراضَlanguid ويَغْمِزُand he winks
I seek from him a sip of his saliva.
I try to sip a draught of his acceptance,
And he lowers his languid eyelids and winks.
Yet he averts his eyes, aloof, remote.
وماand what ضرَّهُharmed him لوif جادَhe gave generously ليto me بلُعَيْقةٍwith a tiny lick
أبلُّI moisten بهاwith it ريقيmy saliva عنconcerning العُمرlife ينجزُhe fulfills
And what harm would it do him to grant me a tiny lick?
No harm if he would grant me a kind glance -
I would moisten my mouth with it—“concerning life, he fulfills” [wording unclear].
I'd rinse my mouth of life's dust, grateful.
فقلتso I said وهلand is it…? جازَwas permissible التباعدُkeeping apart فيin الهوىlove
فقالso he said أجلyes إنindeed التمنُّعَcoy refusal أجوزُmore permissible
So I said, “Is keeping apart permissible in love?”
I said, "Is estrangement seemly in love?"
He said, “Yes—coy refusal is even more permissible.”
He said, "Yes, coyness has its charm, you know."
فقالso he said أخفapparently: I fear فعلَthe actions الوشاةِof the tale-bearers وقولَهمand their words
فقلتso I said فماso there is no واشٍtale-bearer لدنياfor worldly gain فيبرزُso he comes forth
He said, “I fear the tale-bearers' actions and their words.”
I said, "Soften the enviers' deeds and words."
So I said, “No tale-bearer for worldly gain will come forth.”
He said, "What spy penetrates our private world?"
فقالso he said غداًtomorrow لاno عذرَexcuse أنتyou تزورنيyou visit me
فقلتso I said لعَمْرِيby my life قطُّever ماnot كنتI was أعجزُI am unable
He said, “Tomorrow, no excuse: you will visit me.”
He said, "Tomorrow you will have no excuse."
So I said, “By my life, I have never been unable.”
I said, "By my life, I have never refused."
فواصلتهso I joined him والبترand the cutting swords حوليaround me هواتفٌcalling out
وسمرand the brown ones القَنَاspear-shafts فيinto لَبَّةِthe hollow of the throat الفِكرُthought تُوكَزُare thrust
So I joined him, while cutting swords called out around me.
I continued to court him, while rivals called -
And brown spear-shafts were thrust into the hollow of thought's throat.
Cares besieged my heart and crowded worries.
