Go swiftly and purposefully, O driver of noble camels.

And halt on lofty al-Taʿlah, coming from the west.

And touch your lips to the central tract’s pebbles, and kiss them.

And weep over them with streaming, pouring tears.

And prostrate yourself there, in reverence at the sight of it.

And go to the valley’s lote tree, beside the athab fig trees.

You will find among them doves lamenting at midmorning,

Yearning, singing their songs in rapture.

And ask them, “Where have the gazelles of the arak trees gone?”

For their lovesick one is now indeed weary.

And go to the watercourse’s acacias, waiting

To see whether a thunderous cloud has kept watering them.

There are suns there we once knew adorned,

Their ruddy necks laden with pearls and gold.

They walk beguilingly, in pride and luxury,

In green draperies or in red brocade.

They smile, revealing daisies seen within carnelian,

Around them gleams saliva from the juice of grapes.

It defends itself with arrows shot from bows—and how many

Human souls those arrows have indeed brought to ruin!

They are the companions; I shall not forget their affection

Until I lie in the depths of the grave and the dust.

We once held dominion in the abodes of pleasure,

Taking shelter and roaming in our new robes.

Then we parted, and separation began to caw in

Our wake, with hideous cries of rebuke and croaking.

But patience—may the All-Merciful reunite us

On the Day of Return, in the loftiest dwellings and ranks.
