He came to me by night, like a breeze from east and west.

Yet no news of him has ever reached me.

Did he come by night to reproach, or to visit his beloved,

embracing him with the intensity of one distraught with love?

And had he heeded my remembrance of him and my praises,

his right hand would not have begun shuffling in fetters.

Listen, O dear folk of al-Bagh, make ready for your journey,

to seek the one who was lost long ago.

And had all the companions known of my need

for him, humankind and jinn would have striven to seek him.

And no defender would ever have turned them from reaching him,

even had he been guarded by every spearhead.

And had I known that your absence was my ordeal,

the gravest calamity would have overtaken you in the loftiest place.
