Did a ruined trace stir your longing, or did a spring encampment?

And behold, with the loved ones gone, it is a barren waste.

It buckled until the hand of decay crushed it,

And bitter wind and tempest heap dust upon it.

And its boughs and branches have already withered,

And a dreadful calamity of time has befallen it.

When the human gazelles left it one morning,

Then wild gazelles remained there, grazing.

Owls lament over it, and the grey doves around it

    Sing melodies there and coo.

    عليه أثافٍ ساجداتٌ وَرُكَّعُ

    And nothing remained there but their hearth;

Upon it are pot-stones, prostrate and bowing.

I stood beside it, the colt's neighing rising high

From longing, while the noble old she-camels shed tears.

    And I shed precious water from my weeping eyes;

And were it not for love, it would not flow or well up.

And it is not for that dwelling that my tears are freely spent,

But for those who dwelt there they pour down.

They were borne by night atop full-grown riding camels,

At times striding across the wastes, at others pacing them out.

And my anguished cries rose high behind their departing caravan,

And my heart is torn to pieces by separation from them.

And the fire of longing blazes between my ribs,

And already my livers and ribs are roasted through.

So my tears do not quench the blaze of my hell,

Nor have tears dried up from the heat of my fire.

And when the reproachers saw my state, they blamed one another,

And said, 'We have ruined him; there is no bringing him back.'

And for one among those slain by separation, there can be no

Hope for his family of claiming compensation.

And would that a maiden who ruined me through love for her

Would die, and we be enfolded in a tomb and laid low.

May my grave not be too narrow for me with her in my embrace,

And may we be summoned together on the day all creatures are gathered,

And may our Lord forgive all our sins,

And in the chambers of the [Gardens] may we rise and ascend.
