God be praised for a maiden whose dwelling is my heart—

    slender-waisted, swaying like slim gazelles.

And her cheek is verdant, blooming with roses,

and her mouth is Salsabil, unsipped.

Will she not grant the closeness her visit brings

to a lovesick man, undone by a broken promise?

Plump of forearm and full of calf—if she rises,

the weight of her haunches bears her down with strain.

    وإنْ تَعَتَبْتُ أبْدَتْ بالمَحَاليفِ

    If you seek union with her, she puts me off;

and if I reproach her, she answers with oaths.

So my heart, through love of her, is now torn apart,

and my body hovers between the unfamiliar and the familiar.

And how often my heart has trembled in love for her, and how often

the reproaching women have persisted in blaming and berating me.

Nor am I deterred from loving her who slays me

by reproach, nor does restraint turn me away from her.

How I yearn for a night of union to bring us together,

in a green spring encampment familiar to the tribe.
