    Behold, my liver flows from my eye sockets,

    and my heart is slain by separation.

    O my solace, ill-omened stars are rising

    upon us, while the spheres of good fortune are setting.

    تشرعنا منهُ قَنَاً وَنُصُولُ

    Parting stretched [between us] after piety had enfolded us;

    from it, spears and blades are leveled at us.

    It makes us swallow the cup of separation at daybreak,

    and our tears are dewdrops upon our bosoms.

    And every healthy joint of ours has grown

    sick with anguish at separation.

    And every brief month of our togetherness,

    when we parted, became long.

    فإن غريرَ الحبِ فهو ذليلُ

    And every proud lover is pampered by union;

    for the unwary one in love is abased.

    So my tears have never run dry, O my solace,

    nor have the ruined campsites grown fertile since parting.

    Parting from you is bitter to me, and union with you

    is sweet, however long its delays may last.

    فيا ليتَه واللهِ ليسَ يزولُ

    May God preserve the time that gathered us together;

    ah, if only, by God, it would never end!

    يطيبُ بنا بعدَ المبيتِ مُقِيْلُ

    Oh, would that I might enjoy nearness to Sulaywa;

    then our midday rest, after the night's stay, would be sweet.

    And she sways her sides; her full figure is

    light, while her buttocks are heavy.

    Soft and full-bodied, slender-waisted, ample-thighed, tender—

    her own anklets girdle her waist.

    And a neck like a white gazelle's when she stretches up

    toward a bān tree in the watercourse, withdrawn with her fawn.

    So no reproacher can ever turn me from loving her,

    even if all the world were a reproacher.
