    لظى الشوقِ يُدنيه ويَبُعده السُّخْطُ

    A dark-eyed one, radiant of brow, visits me;

the blaze of longing draws him near, and displeasure drives him away.

He reproaches me while tears inscribe his cheek,

like lines strung across pages, set straight by script.

And around it glows the green of his cheek-down,

and dots define the fāʾ-shapes at his temples.

The saliva in his mouth shames honey in sweetness,

yet no one ever comes near enough to sip it.

It passes to and fro among those pearls, and around it

is carnelian; I fancy red wine has been mixed with gleaming saliva.

So the arak twig told me of its taste,

just as the necklace had told me of his collarbones.

And his hair, like vipers, assails us,

with a bite at our minds, followed by a sting.

    يَفُّت الغوالي من عقيصتهِ المِشْطُ

    And it spreads across his back, black and long;

the comb crumbles perfumed pastes from his braid.

A youth—my eye is a lām upon his cheeks,

and my heart is an earring beside his braid.

His perfume betrays him when he visits me,

and his mantle conceals his footprints.

And all night he brightened my ears with pearls,

while the star of the Pleiades sank in the west.

And the sweetness of his speech makes the dwelling bloom,

and within it myrtle, tamarisk, and bitter-fruited trees grow green.

    تَنَثّرَ دَمعٌ من مدامعهِ سِقْطُ

    He saw the dawn whitening and rose, alarmed;

tears scattered in drops from his tear ducts.

And he rose to bid farewell, spreading his fragrance,

and grants me a brief respite, then draws far away.

The prime of youth turns him away, frowning,

whenever flecks of gray climb my temples and my locks.

He wept tears he could not restrain,

like the bounty of Sultan's son, through whom drought receded—

Saʿid, with manifest truth as his ally,

and justice and equity have shone through his judgments.

His right hand grips the reins and spears,

but with his wealth that hand is open wide.

    يسوقُ بهم بَيْنٌ وسَيْرٌ بهم يَمْطُو

    And his enemies flee when he intends a raid;

parting drives them on, and travel speeds them away.

Were the ravens of night to glimpse his sword,

their inner flight-feathers would whiten, their heads turn grizzled.

Whenever he mounts his steeds, away leap

the lions of battle from him, when he means to strike.

When he circles in the fray, thrusting at the foes,

the mighty champion fears meeting him in battle,

with a sword like carnelian gems; and his supple spears—

they are spotted vipers that bite the foes.

A cloak of dust flutters over him,

and is rent by white swords and brown Rudayni spears.

And live on, secure in God's shade,

and may the keen claw cut down your enemies.
