I rebuked a reprover who sought, by his reproach, to turn me away

from the dark-skinned—this was part of his ignorance.

Nor did he know that the eye, were it not for its blackness,

would not do the work of bows and their arrows.

Nor did he see that the full moon, at the center of its form,

has a dark patch—but his mind...

And no day shines forth in this world without

a black night veiling it as it falls.

And who does not love youth and its color,

yet longs to love gray hair and its blade?

And whoever condemns the love of blackness has never been

versed in passion's deeds and its power to kill.

So he seeks nothing but food for his belly,

like a gaunt beast that grazed on herbage and was returned to its tether.
