So behold my eye: its tear-shedding has grown fiercer,

And my crimson tear flows ever more freely,

When lightning flashes at al-ʿUqīqa late at night,

And when its doves sing above the branches.

I trail the hems of pride there in drunkenness,

And there its laurel puts forth leaves [final word unclear].

And I have a liver that has never ceased to burn with yearning,

And I have a heart whose lovesick frenzy has grown with longing.

My joints melt as lead melts,

When the tents of Layla's dwelling are mentioned.

So my soul is slain by that little full moon,

And even were it to live, its sickness would increase.

And Layla's distance and her rejection kill me,

And I live when she visits and her greeting bids me live.

    يُرَاوِدُها في كلِّ حِينٍ حِمامُها

    And Layla bears many times the love that is in me;

Her death woos her at every moment.

And even if a dead man's bones in the dust

Were decayed, her words would revive him, and he would rise.

The rain clouds' gleaming lightning resembled her

When she smiled, her veil having fallen away.

And oh, if only Layla would always be my bedfellow,

Her wine soothing me after her sweet saliva.
