And all my life, I see no parting bringing

Reunion from them to me before I am buried.

And oh, my grief for that stream and its shade!

As though through it I were bequeathed some of Jacob's sorrow.

I would ransom with my life a meeting preceded by an encounter with death,

And a phantom vision from ʿUlayya that comes searching.

With it I moisten a heart parched by longing,

And longing's armies have raided, making sport of patience.

Whenever they mention a place in ʿUlayya's land,

Then its whispering breathes into the expanse of my breast.

I wept—if only weeping were my helper!

But it is an incurable, tainted disease.

My patience has dwindled, while my sorrows lengthen,

Like the reach of the lord's hand—ask about him and inquire.

Scion of the Muslims' Imam and of his son,

Saʿid, whose covenant is never broken.

When he clashes with enemies on the day of his combat,

On sleek, full-grown steeds that remain firm in mettle.

    تصيحُ العُلا من بأسه وتغوث

    He is the lord renowned in every raid;

Glory cries out at his might and calls for help.

He built lofty honors and rank for the sons of Azd,

And meets his foes bareheaded and disheveled,

With a sword, as though death had opposed its edge,

And with resolve and prudence bequeathed to sons.

The lions among his foes meet him in awe,

Then he leaves them helpless, panting like a dog.

So, through his might, dwellings have become desolate [uncertain reading],

And lands become tilled through bounty.

So all glory falls short of what he does,

Nor does any pride remain for nose-rings or the earring-adorned.

And endure, my lord, in honor, glory, and eminence,

And may all who opposed you be mired in distress.
