Take heed, then listen, O son of Yahya, to my words,

If you are fit to listen to what is said.

So do not praise yourself to proclaim your virtue,

For a young man's self-praise brings no benefit.

Nor claim superiority over the son of Salim,

For he is better than you, purer and braver.

For he is praiseworthy [reading uncertain], encompassing praiseworthy qualities,

And his character defends him in the face of reproach.

Nor are a lion and a doe equal in action,

Nor are an asp and a frog equal in venom.

And faith, the sword, and generosity have indeed eluded you,

And your garb is blackened and patched with blame.

    Sulayman, whose sword sought procreation,

As Dhu al-Yawmayn drew his sword, or Tubba' drew his.

The chroniclers of them both are, through time, like the sun in its radiance,

And their renown is proclaimed until the Resurrection.

And you are a jaffath, much given to puffing,

And the puffing creature is not wont to sting.

And you are a coward in wars, and tight-fisted

With money; as for your honor, it lies in tatters.

And in the town of Rustaq, your reputation is widespread.

You fled while the sword of mettle had not yet gleamed.

And be like Ibn Jawfal at the port of Muscat,

For you take fright at the blood of circumcision.

And you are nothing but ruin after ruin,

But this age raises up the monkey.

But be patient, for the nights are treacherous.

And from them, tomorrow, a steeped poison will make you writhe.

And separation will prolong lamentation in the midst of your home.

Because of it, your home will become desolate—a dusty, barren waste.
