A swift flash gleams at al-Suwaykhif.
A brilliant flash from his sword gleaming,
Weariness complained of it as it blazed with light.
My eyes complained though it was brightly beaming,
بداappeared ضاحكاًsmiling كالعِرقِlike a vein بالعضوِin the limb نابضٌpulsing
وقدand already دَلَسgrew dark الديجورُpitch darkness والليلُand the night كارعُdrinking deeply
It appeared smiling, like a vein pulsing in a limb,
It seemed to smile like sweat on a throbbing vein,
while pitch darkness deepened and night drank deep.
As the night crept in and darkness was gaining,
يعطrends جلابيبَthe cloaks الظلامِof darkness ابتسامُهits smile

وقدand already شرِقتْchoked بالدَّمعِwith tears منيof mine المَدامِعُthe tear ducts
Its smile rends the cloaks of darkness,
Its smile gives the robes of darkness light,
while my tear ducts have choked with tears.
My eyes were streaming with tears at the sight,
أظُنُّI think وظنّيand my surmise صادقٌtrue أنthat عُلوةًʿUlwa

I think—and my surmise is true—that ʿUlwa
I truly think that my love Uluwwa,
has had her curtain and head-veils slip away from her.
Has unveiled, removing her veil's barrier,

Bygone pleasure and familiar habit appeared to me,
She teased me, to finish what we'd begun,
and a time that held the loved ones together:
And bring together those whose hearts are one,
لياليَnights عندَamong البيضِthe fair-complexioned women تُغْفَرُis forgiven زلّتيmy lapse
ويَعلوand rises بهاin them قَدْريmy standing وسَعْديand my good fortune طالعascendant
nights when, among fair women, my lapse was forgiven,
My sins are forgiven in nights with her fair skin,
and my standing rose in them, my good fortune ascendant.
My status and joy ever rising within,

In them my gaze exchanged messages, guarding with its glance
With her glance my eyes converse and implore,
each languid beauty before whom the heart bowed.
While for her my heart humbly kneels before,

Delicate beauties whose complexion spared them the need for jewels,
Maidens whose cheeks make dye forswear its hue,
upon them are marvels of exquisite beauty.
On them beauty's wonders are seen anew,

Long-necked beauties, slim-waisted, gazelle-like and amiable,
Dresses like gazelles, friends graceful and slight,
with roaming grounds and pastures within my heart.
For them in my heart are meadows of delight,

They appeared from behind their curtains with faces
From beneath their veils appear faces like moons,
mirrored by full moons rising in the darkness.
Which fate drew in darkness with fortune's boons,

Their supple forms resemble crossing spears,
Their robes tell of spears and bows straight and taut,
and their glances are cutting swords among us.
Their glances at us like keen-bladed swords fought,
عصيتI defied عذوليmy reproacher فيin الهواءِlove (apparently intended; written 'air') عنافةًfiercely
وإنيand indeed I بماto whatever تهوىdesire الأحبةُthe loved ones طائعُobedient
In love, I fiercely defied my reproacher,
I disobeyed my chastity wantonly,
yet I obey whatever the loved ones desire.
For what my love desires I comply,
فهلso is there قائلٌsomeone to speak ياO قومmy people عنيon my behalf لعُلوةٍto ʿUlwa
فإنfor indeed فؤاديmy heart فيin هواهاlove for her لضائعُsurely lost
Will anyone, my people, speak for me to ʿUlwa?
Will none tell Uluwwa of my plight,
For my heart is surely lost in love for her.
When my heart for her is wandering lost in night?
أكلِّفُI compel عينيmy eye أنto تَصُبَّpour out دموعَهاits tears
وآماقُهاand its inner corners بالسَكْبِin outpouring هُنَّthey هوامِعُstreaming
I compel my eye to pour out its tears,
I task my eyes to pour down their tears,
and its inner corners stream in an outpouring.
As the lids freely shed those liquid spheres,
عسىperhaps تنظفيbe quenched (apparently intended) منfrom لاعجِthe searing sting الشوقِof longing حرقةٌa burning
وماand not الدمعُtears منagainst حَرِّthe heat العلاقةِof attachment نافعhelpful
Perhaps a burning born of searing longing may be quenched,
May burning agony from fierce longing get healed,
yet tears avail nothing against the heat of attachment.
For tears cannot help when hearts are unsealed,
وأكتمُand I conceal أسراريmy secrets بقلبيin my heart ولمand have not أبُحْdivulged
ولكنّهُbut it للسرِّof the secret لاno شكَّdoubt ذائِعُa divulger
I conceal my secrets in my heart and have not divulged them,
My secrets I hid within my heart securely,
but it surely gives the secret away.
But secrets, no doubt, will spread out overtly,
بنفسيat the cost of my life دهراًan age بالأحبةِwith the loved ones حائدٌturning away

بهin it مُثْمِرٌfruit-bearing روضُthe garden اللِّقاof meeting وهوand it يانِعُripe
I would ransom with my life a time gone away with the loved ones,
Long I have erred from my loves blissfully,
when the garden of meeting was fruitful and ripe.
Yet the meadow of union bears fruit ripely,
وعوّضتand I was given in exchange دهراًan age قاومتنيresisted me حروفُهُits letters
وتردand drive away عنيfrom me بالقَسرِby force منهfrom it الروادعthe deterrents
And in exchange I was given a time whose letters resisted me,
And time that opposed me I have substituted,
and its deterrents forcibly drive them away from me.
Though its laws from my wish sternly precluded.
