    لوامعه مذ أحرقتْ حَلَلَ الدُّجى

    A glimmer of lightning appeared in the west, while weariness complained;

When its flashes burned the robes of darkness,

I recalled the days of lovely women and union with them,

And my body had become drenched in tears.

And I was a mere child when love befell me,

And from love's entrance I see no way out.

And I yearn like aged she-camels, voicing their plaintive cries,

For one whose face appeared radiant, like the sun.

And down blooms on his cheeks, and around it

Are scorpions: whoever they sting has no escape.

And a mouth the jeweled sash resembles, which he guards

With an eye grown jet-black through the effacing of its lashes.

    ترى القرط منه خائفاً مَتَلَجْلِجاً

    And serpents of hair lie in wait above his back;

You see the earring afraid of it, quivering.

And a neck like a white gazelle's as it flees in fright,

The jewels shine upon it with a curving light.

And a slender waist, like a braided cord,

And hips that shamed the waves when they swayed,

And a supple figure like a Samhari lance,

And a leg around which the anklet choked and drew tight.

He joins me in love while night spreads its tresses,

And tale-bearers find no path for their scheming.

So from her palms I sip the pure wine,

And after the wine I sip a mouth with spaced teeth,

In a garden with trees, illumined by radiance,

The thundercloud clothes it in a brocaded robe.

I sway, my garments fresh and new upon me,

And my head crowned with the crowns of youth.

And all my signals are heeded,

And whatever I hold is right, even if crooked.

And oh, would that whoever blamed the two lovers for their love

Were, among humankind, deaf and blind and lame.
