حصانيmy horse لاnot فيamong الصافناتِthe poised-standing steeds التيthat مَضَتْhave gone before
سواهother than him ولاnor فيamong المقبلاتِthose yet to come نَظِيرُa peer
My horse—neither among the poised steeds gone before
My horse, unmatched in ages past
Is there another like him, nor a peer among those to come.
Or those to come, without a peer,
لهhe has غرّةُa white forehead blaze كالبدرِlike the full moon فوقَabove جبينِهِhis brow
وتُشرِفَand it rises into view فيon الآفاقِthe horizons وهيwhile it تُنيرُshines
He has a blaze like the full moon above his brow,
With brow like the full moon when it shines
And it rises into view on the horizons, shedding light.
Illuminating the horizons clear,
وعينٌand an eye كعينِlike the eye of السولعيthe wild bull يُديرُهاhe turns it
ولكنّهاand yet it لاnot يعتريهاovertakes it فتورُlanguor
And he turns an eye like a wild bull's,
With eyes like a docile oryx turning
Yet no languor overtakes it.
Tirelessly, with vision sharp and sheer,
وجيدٌand a neck كجيدlike the neck of الظبيthe gazelle حينwhen يُطيلهُit stretches it out
عليهupon it كأمثالِlike likenesses of الحريرِsilk شعورُhairs
And a neck like the gazelle's when it stretches it out,
With neck like a graceful gazelle’s
With hairs upon it resembling silk.
Long locks of silk adorning, flowing near,
وبطنٌand a belly عليهupon it الطُولlength والصَّدرُand the chest واسعٌbroad
رحيبٌspacious وأمّاand as for ظهرُهhis back فقصيرُthen it is short
And a long belly, and a broad chest,
With barrel expansive, chest full and broad,
Spacious—while his back is short.
Back short yet stance assured, nothing to fear,
وصورتُهand his form كالعَتْرِlike the ʿatr (meaning uncertain) فازَhe excelled وإنْand if سعىhe runs
هوhe العُثْرُthe ʿuthr (apparently a bird) فيin جوِّthe air of السماءِthe sky يطيرُhe flies
And his form is like the ʿatr; he excels, and when he runs,
In form like a soaring eagle in flight
He is the ʿuthr, flying through the air of heaven.
Should it stumble, to the sky it would veer,
ولاand not يبتغيhe seeks حلباًurging (contextual reading) إذاwhen كانَhe is راكضاًgalloping
لهhe has فيin علوِthe heights of الخافقينِthe two horizons (east and west) صفيرُa whistling sound
And he needs no urging when he gallops;
No need of whip when set loose at full gallop,
His whistle rings in the heights of the two horizons.
Only the wind in its ears you would hear,
أديرI adjust عليهupon him سرجَهhis saddle وهوwhile he is مُلْجَمٌbridled
إذاwhen همنيoccupies my thoughts قصدٌa pursuit العُلاglory ومسيرُand a journey
I adjust his saddle upon him while he is bridled,
I bridle and saddle when headed uphill,
When the pursuit of glory and a journey occupy my thoughts.
Seeking the heights is my sole aim and cheer,
واسألُand I ask ربيmy Lord أنْthat يكونَhe be معافياًsound and healthy
مدىthroughout الدهرِall time والرّبُand the Lord الإلهGod قديرُall-powerful
And I ask my Lord that he remain sound
I pray to my Lord for its wellness and health
For all time; the Lord God is all-powerful.
For as long as I live, my Lord is most near.
