Lo, every night in which a beloved visits

Is short; but if the beloved company departs, it is long.

And all tears of love whose flow has dried

Will surely flow again in the wake of parting.

And all patient endurance in separation falls short,

And every proud one is humbled by parting.

And every companion who seeks to censure a lover—

That one weighs heavily upon the lover's heart.

And the sweetest love is that whose union cannot be attained,

And the finest beloved is slow to fulfill his promises.

O you who reproach lovers, taste the flavor of love,

For you are a malady lodged within the heart.

You berate the devotees of love—die of regret!

For one in love will not turn from the state he is in.

Bliss to him whose beloved has visited his bed

On a night of good fortune, while the watcher is heedless,

And spent the night pouring him wine from his lips,

And brief conversation grows long with reproach.

And the radiant dawn was not absent,

Nor had the hour come for Sirius, the Crossing One, to set.
