وقامتُهاand her stature غُصْنٌa branch علىupon حِقِفِa curved dune of الرَّمْلِsand
And a tipsy-limbed woman, slender-waisted and soft-skinned,
With the flexing of her slender waist she sways
Her figure a branch upon a curving sand dune.
Like a branch above the sandy dunes
فَنَىundid مقلتيmy eye خالٌa mole بِنَبْتِamid the down on عذارهاher cheek

A mole amid the down on her cheek undid my eye,
My eyelids have become dark with lack of sleep
And she has robbed me of sleep with her wide eyes.
As her eyes have robbed me of rest
أحاولI seek ترشافsipping الأقاحِdaisies بِثَغْرهاin her mouth

I seek to sip the daisies in her mouth,
I try to sip from her mouth
While the serpents of her temples creep to kill me.
While the snakes of her cheeks creep to kill me

Your glances, O gazelle of the thicket, are killing me,
Your alluring glance, O gazelle of the dunes, slays me
And love of you in my heart melts my joints.
And your love melts my joints within me
وتَنْفُرُand you shy away عنيfrom me نَفْرةًa recoil بعدafter نَفْرةa recoil
ولستُand I am not مَشوباًtainted فيكregarding you حَقّاًtruly بِبَاطِلِwith falsehood
And you shy away from me, time after time,
You shy away from me again and again
And I am truly untainted by falsehood in my love for you.
Though I have done no wrong against you

You return to the shade of the little wild fig trees at al-Liwa,
You incline to the shade of the sand dunes
And go to the soft sandy ground, toward the groves.
And walk to the barren land toward the meadows

And you drink from al-ʿUdhayb's water and graze
You drink from the fresh springs and graze
On little tamarisks in Wadi al-Ghada and the watercourses.
Among the does in the valley of meadows

So head there at midmorning, in its pleasant shade;
Go straight with the free wind at dawn
There are my dear companions at Burqash ʿAqil.
To my companions at the wise encampment

And if you come among the moringa trees of Salʿ and Darij,
And if you come with the moving sands
Then convey to her my greetings and my messages.
Convey my greetings and missives
وَسَلْهَاand ask her فؤاديmy heart أينَwhere ضاعَwas lost وَقُلْand say لهاto her
تُخَبِّرْكَshe will tell you عنabout عُرْبٍaffectionate women بتلكَin those المَنَازِلِdwellings
And ask her where my heart was lost, and speak to her;
Ask my heart where it has strayed
She will tell you of affectionate women in those dwellings:
It will tell you of the dwellings it yearns for

Noble, graceful women who swayed, wearing necklaces,
Necklaces sway with pendants a-dangle
Shining like sunlight beneath their thin garments.
Shining like the sun beneath the veils
قدalready اصفَرَّturned yellow لونيmy complexion فيin هواهاlove of her ولمand have not تَزَلْceased
دموعيmy tears لذكراهاat remembering her زَرَتْscoffed بالمَخَايلِat the rain clouds
My complexion has yellowed with love of her, and still
My color has yellowed with passion for her
My tears at her memory put the rain clouds to shame.
While tears remembering her flow down my cheeks
سُرِرْتُI rejoiced وريعانُand the bloom of الشبابِyouth مساعديmy helper

I rejoiced, with the bloom of youth aiding me
I rejoiced when the youths were my aides
In reaching her; I shall fear neither my watcher nor my reprover.
To her, fearing no watcher or chider

She meets me eagerly every day,
She visits me longing each day
And knocks at my door at midmorning and in the late afternoons.
Knocking at my door at dawn and in the evenings

She kisses my temples; then I turn aside, averting my face,
She kisses my cheeks then turns away aloof
And my stem is fresh in color, not withered.
While my withered promise bears no fruit

And the beauties do not fear their watcher
The singing girls fear no watcher
When joining me, nor heed anyone's words.
When joining me, heeding no slander

May God preserve a pleasure now ended, and a familiar habit;
God bless a passion fulfilled and a love
Gone are the sweetness of my pleasures in it and my virtues,
That perfumed my pleasures and graced my virtues

Like images of a phantom that visited my bed,
Like an apparition that stirred my resting place
And neither my palm nor my fingertips grasped it.
But evaded my hand though I grasped for it
