وقائلةٍand a woman asking مَنْwho طَوَّقَencircled with a necklace الخلقَhumankind جودُهُhis generosity
وقائلةٍ مَنْ طَوَّقَ الخلقَ جودُهُ
بأعناقهِمabout their necks طَوْقاًa necklace فقلتُso I said هلالُHilal
بأعناقهِم طَوْقاً فقلتُ هلالُ
And a woman asked, 'Whose generosity has encircled humankind
She who adorned people's necks with his generosity like a necklace,
with a necklace about their necks?' I replied, 'Hilal.'
I said to her, he is the crescent moon,
سليلُa scion of سعيدٍSa'id نجلُson of سلطانSultan الذيwho
سليلُ سعيدٍ نجلُ سلطان الذي
قصارُshort القَنَاspears فيin راحتَيْهِhis two palms طِوالُlong
قصارُ القَنَا في راحتَيْهِ طِوالُ
A scion of Sa'id, son of Sultan, whose
The descendant of Sa'eed, the son of the Sultan whose
short spears are long in his two palms.
Short spear is long in his grip,
هوhe السيدُthe lord المعروفُrenowned فيin كلِّevery بُقْعَةٍregion
هو السيدُ المعروفُ في كلِّ بُقْعَةٍ
لهfor him فيin علوِّrising above الخافقينِthe eastern and western horizons مَجَالُscope
له في علوِّ الخافقينِ مَجَالُ
He is the lord renowned in every region;
He is the renowned master in every place,
he has scope to rise above the eastern and western horizons.
He has scope in the highest heavens,
سخيّgenerous أبيّunbowed لاnot يُطاقcan be withstood كفاحُهhis combat
سخيّ أبيّ لا يُطاق كفاحُه
وليسَand there is no لهُfor him فيin ذاthis الزمانِage مِثَالُequal
وليسَ لهُ في ذا الزمانِ مِثَالُ
Generous and unbowed, he cannot be withstood in combat,
Generous, benevolent, his struggle cannot be endured,
and he has no equal in this age.
And he has no equal in this time,
تخِرُّfall down لهbefore him الأقْرانُrival warriors فيin الحربِbattle سُجَّدَاًprostrate
تخِرُّ له الأقْرانُ في الحربِ سُجَّدَاً
إذاwhen قدَّcleaved هاماتِheads of الرِّعالِthe cavalry ranks نِصَالُblades
إذا قدَّ هاماتِ الرِّعالِ نِصَالُ
Rival warriors fall prostrate before him in battle,
The peers bow to him in war prostrated,
when blades cleave the heads of the cavalry ranks.
When the tips of the deadly lances bare,
وأثنىand extolled عليهِof him بالقريضِin verse مدائحيmy praises
وأثنى عليهِ بالقريضِ مدائحي
ولوand even if لَجَّpersisted obstinately عذّاليmy reproachers عليَّagainst me وقالواand spoke
ولو لَجَّ عذّالي عليَّ وقالوا
And my praises have extolled him in verse,
And I praised him in poetry,
even if my reproachers persist against me and speak,
And even if my enemies turned on me and said,
وحرَّمنيand deprived me of صرفُvicissitudes of الزمانtime نوالَهhis bounty
وحرَّمني صرفُ الزمان نوالَه
ولوand even though أنthat جدواهhis largesse عليَّfor me حَلالُlawful
ولو أن جدواه عليَّ حَلالُ
and time's vicissitudes deprive me of his bounty,
And the times deprived me of attaining him,
even though his largesse is lawful for me.
Even if they made it prohibited for me,
Sol 6.1
