أتقضيwill ... perish? معيwith me إنif حانcomes حَيْنيmy death تجاربيmy experiences
وماand not نلتهاI gained them إلاّexcept بطولthrough prolonged عناءِtoil
Will my experiences perish with me when my death comes?
Do you spend time with me if my time comes
Yet I gained them only through long toil.
And I did not get it except after long suffering
وأبدلand I exchange جهديmy effort فيin اكتسابacquiring معارفٍknowledge
ويفنَىand perishes الذيthat which حصّلتهI acquired it بفنائيwith my death
And I trade my effort to acquire knowledge,
And replace my effort in acquiring knowledge
and what I have acquired perishes when I perish.
And what I gained disappears with my demise
ويحزنُنيand it saddens me ألاّthat ... not أرىI see ليّfor me حيلةًa way
لإعطائهاto give it منsomeone who يستحقُdeserves عطائيmy gift
And it saddens me that I see no way
And it saddens me that I do not see a way for me
to give it to someone who deserves my gift.
To give it to one who deserves my gift

When the wealthy bequeath wealth to their sons
If the wealthy bequeath their sons wealth
and prestige, how wretched are the sons of the wise!
And status, how wretched are the wise men's sons
