وهمتكمand your resolve تعلوrises علىabove المشترِيJupiter قَدْراin stature
Why should I fear oppression or dread time,
Why should I fear injustice or dread fate,
when your resolve rises above Jupiter in stature?
When your ambition transcends the buyer's worth?
وليand I have ذمةa pledge of protection منكمfrom you مؤكدةُfirmly secured العرىthe bonds

And I have from you a pledge of protection, its bonds secured,
I have a protected covenant with you,
and hopes made strong by your radiant favors.
And hopes empowered by your kind deeds.

And I may boast before my companions, since you have directed
I can boast that my company wherever directed
your care toward me, and I may exult in pride.
Is your care for me, and pride grows in me.

I gladden my soul, since care has embraced it,
Give joy to my soul that your care
your care, with news of what it seeks—how welcome the tidings!
Has what it desires; oh, happy tidings!

And when my soul yearned to attain the heights,
When my soul poured itself out to attain the heights
and, in its longing, expected good from this age,
And thought this time would bring it good,

it refused to bring my soul what it deserved,
It refused to provide what it deserved
and cruelly turned its petitioner away with a rebuke.
And turned its asker away with a river of help.

And it brought what my soul would not accept, even if
It came with what souls other than mine incline to,
other souls, in their folly, had been drawn to it.
Though foolish, it leaned toward that.

But my soul is a free man's soul, so it did not yearn
But my soul is a free soul, so it did not care
for anything lowly, nor did its aspirations seek a pittance.
For baseness or seek paltry contention.

And I told it that time's ways are such
I told it that time's affairs
that one like me is granted ease after hardship.
After hardship, ease is appointed.

And I soothed it for a while, but it rejected my consolations;
I reasoned with it for a while, but it rejected my reasoning
and urged it to be patient, until, when it had no patience left,
And I persevered with it until, finding no perseverance,

It saw that to attain your love is perfect
of success and the greatest favor for whoever seeks it.
For one whose mother bore good fortune and great favor.

And whoever is thirsty and can make the effort
One who is thirsty, if effort is possible,
must strive to reach the sea.
Must make effort to attain the sea.

And even if I speak at length in describing your generosity,
If I am long in describing your merit
and spend my whole life, I cannot reckon all the thanks due to you.
And expend my life, I cannot thank you enough,

And I have an excuse for brevity here, for I could never
And my falling short is excused; I cannot
count the stars of the horizon or number the raindrops.
Count the stars of the horizon or the drops of rain.
