ثقي يا عزَّ بالله القديرِ

وبالإنصافُ والفضلُ الكبيرِ

Trust, O ʿIzz, in Almighty God,

Trust, my dear, in God Almighty,

And in justice and abundant grace.

In justice and great virtue.

أيغلبني على حقي مغيرٌ

أيغلبني على حقي مغيرٌ

ويرهقني ولم افقد نصيري

ويرهقني ولم افقد نصيري

Can an aggressor wrest my right from me

Can an aggressor overcome my right

And oppress me, though I have not lost my supporter?

And exhaust me when I've not lost my helper?

عدمتُ رويتي وثباتَ جأشي

عدمتُ رويتي وثباتَ جأشي

إذا خطر القنوطَ على ضميري

إذا خطر القنوطَ على ضميري

May I lose my sound judgment and firmness of heart

I lost my composure and steadfastness

If despair should cross my mind.

When despair crept into my conscience.

وخانتني البصيرةُ إن عراني

وخانتني البصيرةُ إن عراني

أسىً ونظرتُ بالنظرِ القصيرِ

أسىً ونظرتُ بالنظرِ القصيرِ

And may insight betray me if I am stricken

And if insight betrayed me when I stumbled

With grief and take a shortsighted view.

Upon sorrow and took the short view.

إذا عدَ الخطوبُ عليَّ يوماً

إذا عدَ الخطوبُ عليَّ يوماً

فإخلاصي وإيماني مجيري

فإخلاصي وإيماني مجيري

If misfortunes assail me one day,

If troubles befell me one day

Then my sincerity and faith are my protection,

My sincerity and faith are my liberators.

وبذلي الجهدَ في تقويم نفسي

وبذلي الجهدَ في تقويم نفسي

وسَيري في الطريقِ المستنيرِ

وسَيري في الطريقِ المستنيرِ

As are my efforts to set myself right,

And my striving to reform myself

And my walking on the illumined path.

And walk the enlightened path.

سلي يا عزّ من لاقيتِ عني

سلي يا عزّ من لاقيتِ عني

وطُوفي بالمصاحب والعشيرِ

وطُوفي بالمصاحب والعشيرِ

Ask those you meet about me, O ʿIzz,

Ask, my dear, whoever you meet about me

And go among companions and close friends,

And frequent my companion and friend.

لتدري أن صبك لم يفرّط

لتدري أن صبك لم يفرّط

ولم يفْرط وذا خير الأمورِ

ولم يفْرط وذا خير الأمورِ

So you may know your devoted lover has not been remiss,

So you may know your weeping did not neglect me

Nor gone to excess—and this is the best course.

Nor did he who is the best of matters neglect.

فلا تخشى عليه ولا تراعي

فلا تخشى عليه ولا تراعي

فمسدي الخير يجزَي بالنظيرِ

فمسدي الخير يجزَي بالنظيرِ

So do not fear for him, nor be alarmed:

So do not worry about him or be concerned

For one who does good is repaid in kind.

For my benefactor rewards in kind.

وإن يكُ ناظرٌ قد غض عنه

وإن يكُ ناظرٌ قد غض عنه

فكم بين الوزارة من خبيرِ

فكم بين الوزارة من خبيرِ

Even if an overseer has overlooked him,

And if a supervisor has turned away from him

How many discerning men there are in the ministry!

How many experts are between authority!

محالُ أن يضيع الحق فينا

محالُ أن يضيع الحق فينا

وفينا مالكُ الرأي الأخيرِ

وفينا مالكُ الرأي الأخيرِ

It is impossible for justice to be lost among us,

It is inconceivable that truth be lost in us

While among us is the one who holds the final say,

When the final judgment is among us.

مُجَلىّ الرأي والأفكارُ حيرى

مُجَلىّ الرأي والأفكارُ حيرى

ومُجْلى الخطبِ في اليومِ العسيرِ

ومُجْلى الخطبِ في اليومِ العسيرِ

Who clarifies judgment when thoughts are bewildered,

Clear minded, confused thoughts perplex me

And dispels calamity on the difficult day.

As do confused words on a difficult day.

ثقي أن سْوفَ يرضيني وخصمي

ثقي أن سْوفَ يرضيني وخصمي

معاً ويجيء بالخير الكثيرِ

معاً ويجيء بالخير الكثيرِ

Trust that he will satisfy both me and my adversary

Trust that soon he will satisfy me and my opponent

Together, and bring abundant good.

سيعطيه مرتبه تماماً

ويبقيهِ بمنصبهِ الخطيرِ

ويبقيهِ بمنصبهِ الخطيرِ

He will give him his salary in full,

He will give him his full salary

And keep him in his important post,

And keep him in his important position.

وينقلني إلى مصرٍ وهذا

وينقلني إلى مصرٍ وهذا

عليهِ ليس بالأمرِ الكبيرِ

عليهِ ليس بالأمرِ الكبيرِ

And transfer me to Cairo—and this

And he will move me to Egypt, and this

Is no great matter for him.
