إليك عميدَ القومِ أمريَ أرفعُ
فأنتfor you أجلّthe most eminent الناسِof people قدراًin standing وأرفعand the most exalted
فأنت أجلّ الناسِ قدراً وأرفع
To you, leader of the people, I submit my case.
To you, leader of the people, I direct my hope -
For you are the most eminent of people in standing, and the most exalted,
You are the most esteemed of men in merit and rank.
وأحسنهمand the finest of them خلْقاًin character وبراًand in kindness ورأفةًand in compassion
وأحسنهم خلْقاً وبراً ورأفةً
وعندكَand with you آمالُhopes الورىof humankind لاnot تضيّعare wasted

And the finest of them in character, kindness, and compassion.
The best of them in character, righteousness and compassion -
With you, humankind’s hopes are never wasted.
And in you lie the hopes of all that will not go to waste.

And you, when the times press hard upon a young man,
When times grow tight for a young man,
Are surely the kindest of heart among mankind, and the most openhearted.
You comfort the gentlest heart among men and make it vast.

زمان ورَبعُ المجد قبلك بلقع
You made the abodes of glory flourish after there had passed
You brought life to the meadows of glory after a time had passed -
A time when glory’s abode, before you, lay desolate.
An era, while the meadows of glory before you were desolate.

And no wonder that your kindness overflowed to humankind,
It is no wonder that your goodness overflows for all -
For you are, without doubt, a wellspring of good deeds.
For you are without doubt a wellspring of good things.

And how many a need in the heart of one like me have you fulfilled!
How many needs of one such as I you have fulfilled -
And that, my lord, is no affectation on your part.
And that, my lord, is no mere affectation from you.

So may you never cease to bestow goodness on whoever comes seeking help,
You still take care to do good for those who come seeking -
And may eminence never cease to hasten to your door.
And the highest of your doors remains open for those who rush to you.

And I earnestly hope you will fulfill a need
I hope that you will swiftly fulfill this need of mine -
Quickly—for the best kindness is the swiftest.
For the best of kindness is that which comes most swift.
