Not everyone who hears the call responds.

Indeed not; nor do all archers hit the mark.

Is every cooing bird of the hills a turtledove?

Or is every branch in the gardens fresh and tender?

About anyone but Layla, a lover takes no delight

In love poetry, nor is amatory verse admired.

Not everyone in whose heart love has taken hold

    Finds torment sweet and pleasing.

Wild, elusive thoughts appear to humankind, yet only

A man of letters forsakes sleep to bind them.
