My days have lavished rare jewels of joy,
My life was adorned with the gems of joy,
And the hills were embroidered with a pattern of flowers.
And fate was woven with the thread of a flower.
فماso what لكwith you لاnot تديرyou pass around عليّto me كأساًa goblet
منof البلورِcrystal ممتلىءfilled بتبرِwith uncoined gold
Why, then, do you not pass me a goblet
Why do you not offer me a cup,
Of crystal, brimming with gold?
Of crystal, filled to the brim with pure wine?
وماليand I have no فيfor السلافةfine wine منany غرامِpassion
فإنso if أنصفتَyou are fair فابدُthen show yourself لهاbefore it بثغرِwith lips
Yet I have no passion for fine wine;
I have no desire for chastity or abstinence,
So, if you would be fair, let it see your lips.
If you would do me justice, reveal your radiant face.
فمنfor from سيفthe sword الجفونeyelids وُقِيتَmay you be spared حتفيmy death
ومنand from خمرthe wine اللمىthe dark hue of lips ياO صاحfriend سكريmy intoxication
For from the sword of eyelids—may you be spared!—comes my death,
From the swords of eyelids you gained your death,
And from the wine of dusky lips, my friend, comes my intoxication.
And from the wine of union, my intoxication.
ففيfor in قلبيmy heart منfrom البرجاءِthe wide-eyed beauty خمرٌwine

For in my heart is wine from the wide-eyed beauty;
In my heart is the wine of hope,
So quench with your lips' moisture the blaze of my embers.
Quench with pleasure the embers of my passion.
ولاand do not تخْشَfear الرقيبَthe watcher ووافِand come جهراًopenly
فأنbut if تخَفyou fear العيونَwatching eyes فجِىءthen come بفجرِat dawn
And do not fear the watcher; come openly.
Disregard the watcher, and come openly,
But if you fear watching eyes, come at dawn.
If you fear the eyes, come under the veil of dawn.

يداريconceals فيin الظلامthe darkness ضياءَradiance بدرِa full moon
Conceal yourself in the gloom before dawn—but how
Dawn conceals magic in its darkness,
can anyone hide a full moon's radiance in the dark?
How can the radiance of the full moon hide in gloom?

Your brow betrays you in every darkness; so let fall
The forehead adorned with curls diffuses darkness,
Over the sun of your brow the darkness of your hair.
Send over the sun of the brow the darkness of hair.
فقمso rise ودعand leave الوشاةthe talebearers إلىfor التصابيyouthful dalliance
فماfor ... not فيin الحبِlove يخشىis feared لومreproach عمرِوAmr
So rise, and leave the talebearers for youthful dalliance;
Arise, leave the slanderers to their amusement,
For in love one does not fear Amr's reproach.
For in love, the blame of censors should not be feared.

And do not be slack in seeking pleasures; seize
Do not neglect delights, make use of
The serenity of life in companionship and cheer.
The purity of life, in intimacy and joy.

May you rejoice in two daughters: one a daughter of the curtained chamber,
Rejoice in two daughters, one the daughter of languor,
With henna-dyed fingertips, and one a daughter of thought.
Rosy-cheeked, the other, daughter of thought.

Indeed, Thurayya has come to you, O Badr,
O moon, you have attained the Pleiades,
Like a garden of pearls that has come to a sea.
Like a pearl necklace coming to the sea.

And the mouth of glad tidings said, when we told
When we said to the mouth of good tidings,
It, 'Record the date': 'Adornments of auspicious wedlock.'
"Reveal the adornments of the bride's preparation."
