وعلامَand why تأسفyou lament وهوand it is أمرٌa matter مبرمُirrevocably settled
How long will you grieve when death is inevitable?
Sadness is inevitable and fate ineluctable,
And why lament, when it is an irrevocable matter?
So why grieve over what's destined and irrevocable?
وإلامَand until when تذرىyou shed منfrom جفونكَyour eyelids عندماcrimson dye
أيَرُدّwill it restore? ماwhat قدalready فاتhas passed هذاthis العندمُthe crimson dye
And how long will you shed crimson dye from your eyelids?
Why shed tears from your eyes when
Will this crimson dye restore what has already passed?
What's passed can't be recalled, that's ineluctable?
حُكْمٌa decree علىupon كلِall البريةِcreation نافذٌenforced
فجنوحُso the longing of نفسكَyour soul للبقاءِto live on تحكّمُpresumption
A decree is enforced upon all creation;
A decree binding all creation prevails,
so your soul's longing to live on is presumption.
So restraining your soul is wise and laudable.
أمرٌa matter تساوَىare equal الكلُeveryone فيهِin it فعابثso foolish is
منwho باتkeeps يعترضُopposing الزمانَtime وينقمُand resenting
A matter in which all are equal; foolish is he
All people share the same inescapable fate,
who keeps opposing time and resenting it.
So opposing time pointlessly is contemptible.

Mourning has lasted long; and do you see in its length
Mourning grew long but does its duration
anything but sorrow whose fires blaze?
Bring ought but more sorrow as fires grow formidable?

A heart terrified by separation, and a last spark of life
A heart alarmed by affliction, a frame
lamenting heartache, and strength sapped and shattered;
Complaining of woes, strong then weak and fragile,
وأضالعand ribs تجفوshun المهادthe bed وأعينand eyes

and ribs that shun the bed, and eyes
Ribs stripped bare of pillows, eyes that
that love sleeplessness, and a soul in pain;
Yearn for rest, an anguished soul liable,
وتحسرٌand lamentation لاnot ينتهيends وتكدرand distress
وكآبةًand gloom تنموgrows وجسمٌand a body يسقمُsickens
and lamentation without end, and distress,
Endless regrets and vexations that thrive,
and growing gloom, and a body that sickens.
Sickness that festers as health grows unstable.

شيئاًanything وهلand does يجديbenefit السقيمَthe sick person تألّمُsuffering
Be gentle with yourself, for weeping cannot bring back
Spare yourself, for weeping can't restore
anything; and does suffering benefit the sick?
What's gone, and the ailing gain naught from their quarrel.
والحرُّand the noble man يلقىَmeets بالرضاwith acceptance حكمَthe decree of القضاfate
وإذاand when استفزتهُagitates him الطبيعةُnature يكتمُhe conceals
And the noble man meets fate's decree with acceptance;
The noble accept the decree of fate calmly,
and when nature agitates him, he conceals his feelings.
The base challenged by nature stay miserable.

He seeks deliverance by whatever means he can,
Seek release however you can find a way;
and when circumstances take control, he submits.
When fate rules, accept and be peaceable.
أودىhas perished الأمينَal-Amin وسوفَand will نوديwe perish بعدَهُafter him
والصبرُand patience أليقُmore fitting ياO سليمُSalim وأسلمُand safer
Al-Amin has perished, and we shall perish after him;
Fate took the trusted one; we too shall go.
and patience is more fitting, Salim, and safer.
Patience is best. Submit and stay pliable.

هلis there? فيin زمانكَyour age لابنfor a son of آدمَAdam مغنمُany gain
If only I knew: what has he missed?
Would that I knew what he missed in his life -
Is there any gain for a son of Adam in your age?
Do men gain aught in their days profitable?
قلtell ليme بعيشكby your life هلwhether رأيتَyou have seen منعماًsomeone at ease
عمّhas encompassed all الشقاءُmisery فليسso there is no ثَمَthere منعّمُone at ease
Tell me, by your life, have you seen anyone at ease?
Say, in your life did you see one content?
Misery has encompassed all; there is no one at ease.
Hardship is general, bliss unobtainable.

Show me a man who, in his lifetime, does not complain
Show me a man in his days who doesn't complain
of something, as he ranges through uplands and lowlands in his affairs.
Of his lot and helps in affairs as he's able.

وفّاكَhas paid you هذاthis الدهرُage ماwhat لاnot يلزمُis owed
There you are, and you are someone we know well:
There you are - you're the one we know
this age has paid you what it was not bound to pay.
Whom fate neglected, as all are aware.

Time has not paid you your due, and all of us
Fate gave you less than your due, and we all
know this; and a father is followed by a son.
Know this, as the source makes the stream indubitable.

Whoever has experienced the days does not grieve over
Whoever tasted time, mourns not the past,
what is past, nor rejoice at anything to come.
Nor rejoices at what's to come, as is suitable.

To those who understand their ways, alike are
Weddings and funerals seem all the same
a wedding for which saddles are readied, and a funeral.
To the wise, who see life as invariable.

تبديلهاchanging it أبداًever ومثلكَand someone like you يعلمُknows
This is the way of the world, and it is impossible
Such is the way of the world, and it can't be
ever to change it; someone like you knows.
Changed at all, as the enlightened are cognizable.

واللهand God يحفظguards منwhomever يشاءُHe wills ويعصمُand safeguards
Yet such is man: his mind grows bewildered;
Yet man's mind is confused, while God protects
and God guards whom He wills and keeps them safe.
Whom He will, as the guided are honorable.
