تغيّبhe was absent عنهاfrom her برهةًfor a while فشكتso she lamented جوىًburning anguish
تغيّب عنها برهةً فشكت جوىً
نواهhis absence ولكنand yet غيرهاanother besides her تشكرgives thanks السعياthe effort
نواه ولكن غيرها تشكر السعيا
He was away from her for a while, and she lamented the anguish
Without a word, I vanished for a time
Of his absence; yet another is grateful for the effort.
She pined, though others thanked my toil and strain
وآبand he returned فأمسىso it became مشتكاهاher lament تشكراًthanksgiving
وآب فأمسى مشتكاها تشكراً
وعادand it became صداهاher thirst بعدafter شدتهits intensity ريّاquenching of thirst
وعاد صداها بعد شدته ريّا
And he returned, so her lament became thanksgiving,
I returned, complaining of her cold disdain
And her thirst, once so fierce, was quenched.
With gentler feelings she returned again
ونادتهand she called to him منfrom فرطexcess السرورjoy وأرختand she recorded the date
ونادته من فرط السرور وأرخت
قدومكyour arrival فيin خيرwell-being أهمّmore important منthan الدنياthe world
قدومك في خير أهمّ من الدنيا
And, overjoyed, she called to him and recorded the date:
Cried she, transported, “Thrice blessed be this hour”
Your arrival, safe and well, matters more than the world.
“Thy presence dearer is than life's domain"
