عليكupon you سلامُpeace اللهGod إنif كنتَyou are مؤمناًa believer
عليك سلامُ الله إن كنتَ مؤمناً
وإنand if كنتَyou are زنديقاًa heretic سحبتُI take back كلاميmy words
وإن كنتَ زنديقاً سحبتُ كلامي
God’s peace be upon you, if you are a believer.
Peace of God be upon you if you are a believer,
And if you are a heretic, I take back my words.
And if you are an infidel, I take back my words.
لقدindeed كانwas سركيسSarkis بمكةin Mecca مُحْرِماًin the pilgrim’s consecrated state
لقد كان سركيس بمكة مُحْرِماً
وطافَand he circled ببيتِaround a house فيin البقيعal-Baqiʿ حرامِthief (first part of split حرامي) يfinal letter of حرامي, ‘thief’
وطافَ ببيتِ في البقيع حرامِ ي
Indeed, Sarkis was in Mecca in a state of ihram.
Sarkis was once a pilgrim in Mecca,
And he circled a house in al-Baqiʿ as a thief.
And circumambulated a house in Al-Baqi’ that was not lawful for him.
