تمرّ مصيبةٌ وتجيء أخرى

A calamity passes, and another comes;

And one sorrow departs, and another settles in.

كأن الحزن مكتوب علينا

فلا نرتاح يوماً من ملمهْ

As though sorrow were decreed for us,

So we have not a day's respite from affliction.

قبح السآمة في ظل الأمان ولا

حُسن التسلي بأنواع من الوجلِ

حُسن التسلي بأنواع من الوجلِ

Better the ugliness of boredom in the shade of safety than

the beauty of diversion through various kinds of fear.
