Elegy is scant beside your lofty virtues,

and weeping is meager praise of you.

And the shedding of tears is not sufficient

to do justice to grief for you, nor equal to it.

And rending garment collars for you is a deed

    too slight to bring consolation.

You passed away in night’s darkness, as lofty virtues bade you farewell,

and nobility of character and loyalty proclaimed your death.

and gallantry and proud dignity lament you.

    And learning mourns you, knowing

that you are its hope in its hour of need.

Was not your father its builder long ago,

and you its guardian, so the edifice rose?

And you fulfilled your duty to it for many long years,

so God’s reward reached you both.

Who, then, is there for poetry and rhymes after you,

and for prose, to dictate whatever he wishes?

And who, for the events of history, will dispel

their darkness when dispute grows tangled?

    its landmarks when obscurity deepens?

the needy among them, when fulfillment proves difficult?

And you founded schools in its uplands,

so emulation spread throughout southern Egypt.

And Upper Egypt indeed surpassed northern Egypt,

and Egypt’s two faces would be alike, but for you.

Your ransom, O Ali, from death

would be hearts’ blood, if ransom were allowed.

You have passed away—may your name live on,

echoed by evening along with dawn.

May the All-Merciful water your grave with rain of mercy,

and may rain drench the ground of your resting place.

And enough for the Prophet’s son is an abode of truth,

and bliss whose beginning has no end.
