Patience is not fitting at parting from you.

And for such an orator as this, eyes weep.

O you, souls have stirred in sorrow

At parting from you—never, after you, will they rest!

For though death's power has mastered you,

Grief is firmly lodged within our souls.

No tear is shed for any calamity but yours,

For after losing you, everything else is slight.

O eye, weep freely, and speak

With tears, for tears are tongues.

Is there an eye that has not shed its tears

In anguish for you, or an eye that does not grieve?

Or is there a heart that grief has not torn apart,

Or is there any strength that is not weakened?

By God, this world is no abode where one may seek

Permanence, or find a pleasant dwelling.

No indeed! Time has no covenant one may hope

To rely upon, nor is there refuge from it.

And God makes His servants inherit the earth,

Whether they wrong themselves or do good.

The cup of death—for all creation, drinking it

Is inevitable, and no created being escapes it.

How can one escape death, while these

Troops of doom thrust with their spearheads?

Or how can a youth hope for serenity, when he

Is formed of clay and lowly water?

And man is death's pasture; so if he escapes

It today, escape tomorrow is impossible.

    الكفّ أولى والتصبر أحسن

    Sorrow does souls no good, nor does grief;

Restraint is more fitting, and patient endurance better.
